Are you not sure yet if the Wild Moon is the right fit for you?
Spending a whole moon-cycle out in nature with very little comfort can be scary. It might feel like you’re risking a lot by joining. Here we have collected some questions that came up previously. If your questions are not on this list, don’t hesitate to send us an e-mail at
Clothing & Gear
Can i bring my down sleepingbag?
No. because When the insulation of a Downsleepingbag get`s wet it will be hard to get it fully dry and the down insulation will crumble. With that it looses a huge amount of insulation capability. That is why we strongly recommend you need to bring a synthetic sleeping bag. If you still want to bring your down sleeping bag, it is at your own risk, that you might need to leave the experience early, if you don’t manage to fix it or find a comfortable alternative.
What kind of shoes do i need in the green/ white season?
We recommend shoes with a low tread, so as to not irritate the forest floor more than is necessary.
For the green season, barefoot shoes work great. Real leather is also a plus, because they will be easier to dry if they get wet.
A model we recomend is: Vivo Barefoot RA1 / Gobi, but any other barefoot shoe is fine.
For the white season it is important to have boots with liners that can be taken out so that they can be dried separately.
A model we recommend is: Sorel Caribou (because of its low tread)
What kind of clothing can I bring?
In the green season, we will use clothes made out of Natural fabric (Cotton, Linen, Hemp etc…) preferrably in natural colors (green, brown, etc.) to better blend into the landscape. In the white season we will wear only clothes made out of Wool, since it still warms you even if it’s wet. If you have buckskin clothing you are welcome to bring this as well. The detailed list of how much and what clothes to bring can be found here.
Will I need my own canoe or kayak?
There is no need to bring your own canoe or kayak. If you have one that you want to bring with you, you’re welcome to do so. If you don’t have one, you can rent it from us.
Will there be a possibility to charge my phone/Powerbank/razor for my journey back?
Yes, we can arrange for that.
Can I bring my own cell phone?
No. The Wildmoon is designed to be an experience free from electrical and complex technical devices. There will be at least two emergency phones. You can also give the emergency phone number to your loved ones so they can contact you in case of an emergency. There will be a safe, dry place for your valuables to be stored during the Moon.
Can I bring items that are not on the packing list?
The packing list has been optimized by the guide team over the years to guarantee the best experience, simple and close to nature, for you and the whole clan. All the items on the list are picked very mindfully and so are the items not on the list. If you still wish to bring them, please contact us.
Please understand that items which are not on the list and brought to the Moon without telling anyone, can change the experience in an unpleasant way for you, as well as for other participants.
Food
Will food be provided or will we have to rely purely on wild food that we catch and gather ourselves?
One part of the food will be provided, and one part is to gather the gifts from the land we live on. This will change over time. The group might get more proficient in catching fish or finding greens and berries further into the immersion. But it could just as well be that travelling to a new area, we’ll find more or less. No matter the ratio, there will be enough food provided to sustain us.
What kinds of food will we get?
The food we provide will be very similar to “paleo” or “stoneage” diet. We will have meat/fish, fat, greens, nuts and fruit. Sometimes there can also be a small amout of starches, like oats or buckwheat, especially if children are part of the group. We try to stay as close as possible to what our ancestors where eating when they walked upon this planet in this area.
Do I need to prepare myself with my diet before the Wild Moon starts?
Yes. We recommend that you stop your coffee and sugar consumption and reduce salt and starches to a minimum. This will make it easier for you to adapt in the new diet. You will receive all the detailed information of what to prepare and when in the preparation phase of the experience after signing up.
Do I have to eat meat and fish in the Wild Moon?
Of course nobody has to eat certain food types if they want to avoid them. However our diet consists of (only wild) meat and fish to a great part and most of the people will still eat meat as well as catch and eat fish and you should be okay with that. Further we will have to look for starch-free options to replace the missing nutrients for vegetarians.
I eat vegan, can I continue that during the Wild Moon?
Since there won’t be sufficient protein and most likely also calories in our animal-free part of the diet, this would probably be a very unhealthy thing to do.
I have a food intolerance, can you arrange the diet plan accordingly?
Yes, we can usually do that if you let us know in advance.
Safety
Will there be bears, wolves or other dangerous animals?
The scandinavian wolf population is mainly concentrated in the southern central parts of Sweden, specifically in the counties of Västmanland, Örebro, Värmland, Dalarna, and Gävleborg. Wolves are rarely found in the northern half of Sweden or in the southern regions.
But even if the Wild Moon happens within that region with a wolf population, it is highly unlikely that wolves would be a danger. They really don`t like to be close to humans, are very shy and will most likely not even be seen, but could be heard.
Bears are predominantly found in the northern two-thirds of Sweden, with the central regions of Dalarna, Gävleborg, and Jämtland having the highest population densities of bears in Sweden.
The only indigenous venomous snake in Sweden is the European common adder, Vipera berus. Snakes usually like sunny and warm places, so it is good keep your eyes open where you step or sit. They usually only attack when they feel threatened. So as long as we see them in time and keep our distance, everything should be fine.
Is there emotional/psychological support during the experience?
There will be a clan wich is there for all upcoming things from your inner world. And there will be a guide team with a lot of experience both in living in nature as well as the inner challenges that come up in those situations (including some trauma responses).
The guide team is part of the immersion the whole time and act as a support. At least one of the team has a more formal psychological and crisis support training. We are however no trained therapists and won’t be able to support people with psychological diseases.
Are there any emergency procedures? What happens if I hurt myself or get dangerously sick?
We do the best we can to be prepared for any kind of emergency. We have people in our team trained in wilderness first aid as well as supporting people in crisis.
For all the immediate smaller injuries we have a well-equipped first aid kit. For more serious injuries, we have emergency procedures in place, including an emergency cell phone in camp, a car somewhat close to camp and knowledge about the nearest hospitals or other medical centers. We also have an emergency-GPS-tracker with an SOS button in case there is no cell coverage in an area. This will alert any rescue service in the area.
But it’s also important to make yourself aware that we will be remote, so it might still be necessary to hike (if possible) to the closest position of where the car can drive, and also rescue teams might have a harder time to get to us, taking longer than in areas with good road access.
General
What kind of prior knowledge and skills do we need?
It is recommended to have experience of having slept outside before in at least a tent or tent-like structure and having spent some time outdoors. It is also helpful to bring some knowledge about plants, firemaking, canoeing or the like, but it is not required. There will be a team of guides to support the learning process and possibly other participants that can share their knowledge.
Will we be in one place the whole time or travel around?
This depends a lot on the theme of the Wild Moon as well as the participants. If there are a lot of children or older people in the group, we will stay mostly in one place and might only move 2-3 times. If the group is mostly adults, or if the environment demands it (e.g. not enough firewood), we will move more often.
The moves will happen mostly with the canoes, so we don’t necessarily have to go on long strenous hikes with heavy backpacks and children.
How many people are in a group?
It depends how many are signing up for each experience and how many guides are available. Usually the groups are between 5 to 30 people maximum. Wild Moons with a focus on families tend to have bigger groups, but it can always vary.
Will there also be some solo time?
The Wild Moon immersion is about how to live in a clan in a natural enviroment. There is no fixed plan for any solo mission, but there will be time for yourself to reflect during the day. Also, if there is a strong wish to do some solo time, it is also possible to do so, as long as it is brought to the clan.
What’s the difference to a rainbow gathering?
At first glance, they might look very similar, but there are some basic differences to the rainbow gathering. We will be in a much smaller group (maximum 30 people), there is more specific focus on practicing ancestral earth skills and about conscious connection to ourselves the other clan members and of course the natural world around us. We are not consuming any drugs, including alcohol, coffee and sugar. There is also more focus on sharing, opening up and bonding within the clan, as well as growing together in community.
Other aspects that are different is that there is a stronger frame set by the organizing team that we commit to not leave during the experience, and there is no coming and going of others. With that stronger frame we also provide guidance for specific skills, like fishing, tracking, gathering wildfoods, crafting, etc., and also emotional and (to a degree) psychological support.
How physically fit do I need to be?
It’s a good start to be able to hike a few kilometers with a light backpack. We also recommend to slightly increase your physical activity before the moon, if you don’t lead a very physically active life anyways. That can help you to have a smoother starting period out there.
